Opening typically in early and mid-summer, flowers are brilliant yellow with maroon or brown centres of various sizes. This drought-tolerant perennial wildflower plant produces small slender seeds which ideally germinate in autumn (overwintering as a low rosette) or early spring. Preferring full sun for maximum impact it will also grow in partial shade. The flowers of Coreopsis tinctoria can be used as the name implies to create dyes. Because of its easy-growing habits this plant is increasingly used for landscape beautification.

Sowing; Sow February to March. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Lightly cover seed with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a temperature of between 20-25C (68-77F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 20-25 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays.
