Selected from flowers of a deep red colour growing to a height of 2½ft (75cm), this is an attractive, white-woolly plant from southern Europe with densely leafy shoots and large flowers, 1½ins across, borne gracefully on elongated stalks. From the Lychnis genus, coronaria species and in the family of Caryophyllaceae, it’s common English name is ‘Corn Rose’ or ‘Rose Campion’.

This hardy perennial is also known as Agrostemma Coronaria Atrosanguinea, flowering in July, August. Full Sun and partial Sun are favourable lighting conditions to consider for this plant while for soil type, sand or loam would be perfect, but remembering to keep it well-drained.

Germination; Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Press seeds lightly into soil but do not cover. Light is needed for germination. Ideal temp. 20°C. Germination takes 10-20 days. Transplant seedlings when they have 2 sets of true leaves to 8cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed. Can be sown directly in spring or summer, this to 50cm spacing. Autumn sowings should overwinter indoors planting out the following spring.

Growing; Prefers moist fertile soil in sun or partial shade. Dislikes winter wet. May benefit from a complete plant food in spring.

Cultivation; Cut back after flowering to encourage further blooms and to prevent self-seeding. Will self-seed freely.
