Among the most popular of spring-flowering perennials, this is a common sight in rock gardens. This forms a low bushy mound of grey-green leaves, smothered in masses of tiny, bright golden-yellow flowers for several weeks. A good choice for edging, rock walls or in mixed containers. Often planted alongside other spring blooming rock garden plants, such as Arabis or Aubrieta, and combines beautifully with spring flowering bulbs of all types. Clip plants back by half, immediately after blooming. Not easily divided. Drought tolerant. Evergreen.

Spring flowering mounds of bright yellow over gray-green foliage. Low, wide growth is excellent cascading over a wall or along the border’s edge. A prolific bloomer, plant in masses for best effect. Alyssum Gold Dust is formerly known as A. sax. Compactum. Alyssum are compact mound-forming perennials. A classic staple for border’s edge or rock garden. Spreading plants with dense heads of golden-yellow flowers in early spring.

Germination; Sow under glass Feb-Mar. Sow directly Apr-May or in autumn. Best to sow directly. Sow 3mm deep into prepared soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Germination takes 7-14 days. Thin to final spacing of 15cm. For early flowering sow indoors 2mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 13-18°C. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out when danger of frost has passed with 15cm spacing. Autumn sowings will emerge the following spring offering earlier flowering.

Growing; Prefers a light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.

Cultivation; Trim all over after flowering to encourage further blooms.
