Sowing & Growing
Sowing rate: 35-70 grams per m2
Oversowing: 20-35 grams per m2
Clear the ground of all debris, and weeds. Use a non-residual systemic weed killer for stubborn weeds. Dig over the entire site with a garden fork, incorporating topsoil or soil improver as needed. Break down hard lumps by striking with the back of the fork. Add sharp sand for drainage if the area is prone to waterlogging. Consider using a powered cultivator for larger areas.
Introduce pre-turf and seed fertilizer at half the recommended rate, removing stones and old roots. Use a garden rake to create an even surface. Compact the soil by firmly pressing with the heels of your boots. Systematically trample the soil, filling in hollows, removing debris, and raking until the ground is even. Avoid walking on the area until ready to sow seeds.
Choose a non-windy day to sow seeds. Use bamboo canes tied together for controlled spreading by hand, or a spreader following recommended rates. Avoid over-seeding to prevent rotting and ensure proper germination. After sowing, lightly rake the surface to mix seeds into the soil. Methodically go over the sown area with a light garden roller.
Initiate germination by watering the seeds. Use a lawn sprinkler if no rain occurs within 48 hours. Water daily for 7 to 10 days until seeds are established.
Protect the area from trampling and birds with cotton-tied canes or fine-mesh netting.
Continue regular watering, especially in dry weather, using a fine mist spray for delicate seedlings. Perform the first cut at 5cm to 8cm with a sharp lawnmower blade. Gradually lower cutting height as the lawn thickens. Avoid weed killer for the first six months; remove weeds by hand during the establishment phase.
