The Torch Ginger is a very showy plant with perhaps the most splendid flowers ever seen! A native of South East Asia, it is a tender perennial well suited to growing indoors or in a heated greenhouse though it can be moved outdoors in summer. Ideal as a specimen plant in a sunny conservatory, it produces magnificent flower spikes up to 1m tall topped with dazzling red cone-shaped flowers. Definitely a talking point. Also great and long lasting as a cut flower.

Pre-Sowing; Soak seeds in warm water for 12 hours or until they swell.
Sowing; Sow at any time of the year. Sow 1cm deep in pots or trays of moist seed compost. Seal in a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain an optimum temperature of 25-30C. Germination should take place in 21 to 60 days. Gradually increase ventilation as the seedlings emerge by opening the bag or propagator vents.
Growing; When the seedlings are large enough to handle, pot up into small pots and grow on in slightly cooler conditions in plenty of light but shaded from direct sunlight. Repot as necessary and place in a bright position. Keep soil moist and do not allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Plants can be placed outside in the summer as long as the temperature does not drop below 10C.
