Seed of this amazing new half hardy perennial garden plant can be sown early in the year and by the same autumn will be completely smothered in hundreds and thousands of shiny, light reflecting flowers, forming perfect mounds (or knolls) 30cm (12in) high and 45cm (18in) across. During a season when little else is in flower, they are a perfect fit for a change in containers or will brighten up the border, looking like blue charm chrysanthemums. No matter what the weather conditions - torrential rain, snow or frost they continue to look far and away the best, brightest plant in the garden, even right through November.

Blue Knoll mums grow easily from seed. Sow the seeds in a container filled with potting soil about two months before your area's last frost date. Lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite. Keep the temperature between 64 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Water the seeds when the soil feels dry. Germination occurs within 10 to 21 days.
Blue Knoll mums can also be propagated from cuttings or division. If you have a mature Blue Knoll mum plant, cut off a piece of stem 4 to 6 inches long. Dip the end of the stem in rooting hormone. Bury the end of the stem 1 inch deep in sand, sphagnum moss or vermiculite. To propagate Blue Knoll mums via division, dig up a mature plant in spring when shoots reach about 1 to 3 inches tall. Separate the root clumps into individual pots.
Soil, Sun and Water; Blue Knoll mums are a very cold-hardy biennial, and they like growing in full sun or part shade. If growing mums indoors, you may need to provide supplemental lighting to make up for the lack of sunlight. Blue Knoll mums need about five or six hours of sun each day. All mums prefer moist, well-drained soil with a pH of approximately 6.5. They do best in loamy or sandy soil.
Planting; Plant Blue Knoll mums in your garden after all danger of frost has passed for your area. Select a site that gets full sun, but is not lit by street or porch lights at night. Nighttime lighting can inhibit bud and flower development. To plant your Blue Knoll mums, dig a hole two times as big as the plant's root ball. Mix a layer of peat or compost into the soil for better drainage. Lower the plant into the hole, fill with soil and water until the soil feels moist.
General Care; If you plant your mums in the spring, fertilize them once per month with a water-soluble plant food. Continue fertilizing through July. Blue Knoll mums planted in the fall do not need any fertilizer. Pinch off the tips of the mums when they reach about 6 inches tall. This prompts flowering and bushier growth. If your Blue Knoll mums were already in bloom when you bought them from a nursery in spring, cut back one-third of the stems to encourage a second round of blooming in the fall.
