A most elegant and beautiful plant with long, pointed, shiny green leaves and brownish-crimson flowers with reflexed petals. Shade tolerant growing up to 1½ft (45cm).

You may be wondering why grow these natural species of tulip from seed when so many different cultivated varieties are so easily available to grow from bulbs? Well, given that you have already arrived at this point in our shop and are still reading this introduction, then it is safe to assume you are a both curious and patient type. This will serve you well in the 4-7 years it will take to reach the point of flowering. However you will be rewarded as, although less ostentatious than their cultivated cousins, they become more reliably exuberant with age. Like a fine wine perhaps. So please note that we sell seeds and not bulbs.

Pretty Wild Seeds are registered with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) under number 7529, so you can have confidence in both our products and advice. Although our products are listed in weights and acres, we can supply in additional quantities upon enquiry so if you need a larger supply, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Germination; Sow Oct-Feb. in a cold frame. Sow indoors Mar-Sep. In a cold frame, sow 3mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 10°C. Allow autumn warmth followed by winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur in spring as the weather warms. Germination takes 2-3 months approx. Indoors, sow seed then cold stratify at 4°C for 2-3 weeks then remove to warmth for germination. Allow seedlings to grow on undisturbed for 18 months so that bulbs may form. Transplant seedlings into a cold frame. Flowering will take 4-7 years from seed.

Growing; Plant bulb 10-15cm deep in a fertile humus-rich, well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Protect from excessive winter wet by offering a dry winter mulch.

Cultivation; Deadhead after flowering. Propagate by lifting bulbs and separating offsets.
