White Campion is an annual, biennial or short-lived perennial frequent on roadsides, in field borders, hedgerows, waste places and grassy banks. It is a weed of cultivated land mainly on light calcareous or sandy soils of pH 6.1 to 8.2. A lowland, sun-loving plant, it is most abundant in southern and eastern England. It grows less well in the shade.

White campion occurs on the margins of woodland and can become established after felling or when coppicing has taken place. It disappears again once the trees regenerate and the habitat becomes shady. It does not grow well on waterlogged soils but is resistant to drought. White Campion is a common wildflower that grows in fields, along hedgerows and roadside verges, and on waste ground. It flowers throughout the summer, but it's actually at night when the blooms produce a heady scent, attracting many feeding moths. White Campion displays white flowers with five petals, each deeply notched and almost divided into two; its oval leaves and stems are hairy. In places where it grows alongside Red Campion, the two may hybridise to produce pinky or white blooms.

Germination; Sow into a coldframe in autumn or early spring. Sow directly after danger of frost has passed. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 20°C. Cold frame sowings should germinate in spring as the weather warms. Direct sowings take 2-3 weeks to germinate. Cold frame seedlings should be transplanted to 8cm pots and grown on under glass, acclimatised and planted out after danger of frost has passed. Direct sowings may be thinned if required.

Growing; Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Will tolerate a moist but well-drained soil. Dislikes winter wet. This is a short-lived perennial often grown as an annual.

Cultivation; Requires little attention. Propagate by seed or via division of offsets when dormant.
